Session 8: trinity / the son

Session Recap:

How was your humility prayer from Session 7?

  • Was anything revealed to you we need to discuss?
  • Is there anything specific you know you received from poor sources? (ie movies, tv shows, non-christian people...)

Ask:

If you were asked, “Who is Jesus?” How would you respond?

Teaching Time:

Remember all of the characteristics of God the Father from last week’s session? Remember that Jesus emcompasses all of these characteristics Himself. Jesus is both fully God, yet came and lived fully human. He felt everything that we feel and yet lived a life without sin. That’s why we can trust Him as a perfect high priest (Hebrews 4:14-10:18). What that means is that when we trust Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He advocates on our behalf to the Father. He defends us, He knows us, He knows our struggles and our fears because He lived them too.

We don’t have a Savior that can’t empathize with us. Also, it’s important to know and understand Jesus as our substitute. His death on the Cross was the substitute for our sin. We say it like this, “Jesus in my place.” Our sin put Him on the Cross but His victory and resurrection sets His people free from the penalty of sin and death.

Application:

Read Hebrews 1:1-4. What does this teach us about Jesus?

  • If Jesus is the exact representation of God, where is the best place to look to truly know God?

Read Colossians 1:15-20

  • What does this teach us about Jesus?
  • What does it mean that you were created by Him and for Him?

Read John 6:35

  • What does it mean that Jesus is the “Bread of Life?”
  • What would it look like if Jesus was as essential as food in your life?

Read John 8:12

  • What does it mean that Jesus is the “Light of the World?”
  • What are the implications of this in your life?

Read John 10:7

  • What does it mean that Jesus is the “Gate for the Sheep?”
  • What is the only door to salvation? What other doors do people try to use?

Read John 10:11-15

  • What does it mean that Jesus is the “Good Shepherd?”
  • How does knowing this help you follow Jesus more passionately?

Read  John 11:25

  • - What does it mean that Jesus is the “Resurrection and the Life?
  • How does knowing this change your view of death?

Read John 14:6

  • What does it mean that Jesus is “The Way, The Truth, and The Life?”
  • What are the implications of this verse in your life?

Read John 15:1

  • What does it mean that Jesus is “The Vine?”
  • What does it mean to abide in Christ?
  • How does understanding the claims that Jesus made about Himself change your view of Him?

Where do we get it wrong?

Most people create their own view of Jesus based on what they want or what their experiences have led them to believe. Here are a few examples:

  • Some people view Jesus as Savior but not Lord.
  • Some people want Jesus but they want Him on their terms.
  • Some people think Jesus is okay with their sin.
  • Some people view Jesus as an emergency plan for their agenda.
  • Some people view Jesus as a good teacher but not God.
  • When we create our own Jesus, the list of false beliefs is endless.

Action Plan:

  • Where are some places in your life you feel you are disconnected from the vine?
  • What can you do this week to reconnect? (This may mean removing yourself from some situations, or it could be the need to pull Jesus into those situations)
