Session 12: What it means to be a missionary

Session Recap:

How have you been applying what you've learned and your action plan(s)?

  • If you haven't, what has hindered you?
  • How do we overcome it this week?

Ask:

Who are called to be missionaries and where are they supposed to go?

Teaching Time:

The “Great Commission” is one of the most misinterpreted passages in the Bible. Many people believe missionaries are only people who move to a foreign country to spread the Gospel. The tense of “go and make disciples” can be translated to “as you are going”. What that means is that being a missionary is a lifestyle. As we are doing life, we live “on mission” for God. We fully believe that God has sent you to share Christ in your sphere of influence. That means your family, your work and your friends. A disciple of Christ is a missionary. You are sent.

Application:

Read Matthew 28:18-20

  • What does this teach us about the mission?
  • What does it mean to “go and make disciples”?
  • What does it mean to “baptize”?
  • What does it mean to “teach to obey”?

Read Acts 1:8

  • What does this teach us about being a missionary?
  • What is a witness? Who gives us the power to be witnesses?
  • Where are we called to go?
  • What does it look like for you to live sent where you are?

Read Romans 10:8-15

  • What does this teach us about being a missionary?
  • Who will be saved?
  • How will people hear the good news?
  • How do you share the gospel? (ask them to verbally share the gospel with you)

Read Matthew 24:14

  • Where will the gospel ultimately go?
  • Talk about our role as disciples in this movement of the gospel.

Where do we get it wrong?!

  • I can be saved and not live on a mission.
  • I’m not qualified to make disciples.
  • Missionaries are only professionals who move to other countries to share the gospel.
  • It’s the preacher’s job to make disciples.
Action Plan:
  • What are some ways you can start to embrace the missionary mindset?
  • Possible plans could include:
  1. Pray for lost people.
  2. Go and Make a disciple.
  3. Invite lost people over for dinner.
  4. Share the gospel with someone.
  5. Invite a person into a discipleship relationship.
